Surgical Masks

Surgical masks are loose fitting, disposable masks meant to be worn only once. The mask creates a barrier between the wearer and potential contaminants in the surrounding environment. Surgical masks are meant to help block large-particle droplets, splashes, sprays, or splatter that may contain germs (viruses and bacteria), keeping it from reaching your mouth and nose. Surgical masks may also help reduce exposure of your saliva and respiratory secretions to others.

N95 NIOSH Respirators

The N in N95 means that the respirator is non-oil resistant. The 95 in N95 means that the respirator filters out at least 95% of small particles. According to the CDC, N95 masks ensure that particles as small as 0.3 microns, as well as large droplets, splashes, and sprays, will not pass through the mask.

Mask Types Compared

According to the CDC, surgical masks are approved by the FDA, while N95 respirators are tested and approved by NIOSH. Surgical masks are loose fitting, while N95 respirators are tight fitting.

Surgical masks are intended to block large droplets, sprays, and splashes; they also are intended to protect the patient from the wearer's respiratory excretions. N95 respirators are intended to reduce the wearer’s exposure to small particles, such as bacteria and viruses, as well as large droplets, splashes, and sprays.

Surgical masks do not filtrate – they are not meant for the wearer to be protected from small particles.

The N95 respirator filters out 95% of all airborne particles.

Both surgical masks and N95 masks should be discarded after each patient contact. Both are disposable.

COVID-19

According to the CDC, COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by the spread of the virus from person to person. Symptoms include, but are not limited to, fever, cough, difficulty breathing, and loss of taste or smell. The virus spreads person to person through droplets when an infected person talks, sneezes, or coughs. The World Health Organization and the CDC recommends wearing a mask when it is necessary to leave the house. Masks help prevent the spread of the virus from person to person by keeping the infected respiratory droplets from reaching those in the immediate environment.
